THE UNMAKEUP SKINCARE LAB
A bi-phase oil cleanser formulated for your skin type, activated and removed using a dampened cotton pad with distilled water.
Oil Cleanser
1
A bi-phase formula — oil phase and surfactant phase — that dissolves makeup through polarity chemistry, activated and removed using a dampened cotton pad and distilled water.
COTTON PAD ritual
2
The application method. Distilled water activates the surfactant at the skin surface. Absorption, adhesion lift, and emulsification happen simultaneously.
FORMULA TEST
3
After completing Gloss Theory and the Eyeshadow Studio labs, apply each product to the back of your hand and test removal using your cleanser and a dampened cotton pad.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
01 SAFETY

SELECT YOUR ADD-IN
JOJOBA OIL
Oily · Combination
A wax ester, not a true oil. Structurally similar to human sebum — signals the skin to regulate oil production.
Sunflower oil
Acne-Prone
High linoleic acid content (~65–70%). Acne-prone skin is specifically low in linoleic acid — this addresses that deficit directly.
ARGAN oil
Dry · Combination
Very lightweight, rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids. Nourishes and softens without clogging pores. Fast-absorbing.
02 mAKE YOUR Bi-Phase Oil Cleanser
Non-polar dissolves non-polar.
1. Put on your safety glasses before handling any materials.
2. Set out all of your materials: your 2 oz bottle containing medium chain triglyceride, your mini bottle of jojoba oil, your mini bottle of sunflower oil, your pouch of argan oil, your mini bottle of coco glucoside, your pouch of distilled water, your 2 cotton puffs, your orifice reducer, and your pipette.
3. Choose your skincare oil. You may choose one or more: jojoba oil is lightweight and closely mimics the skin’s natural oils, making it suitable for most skin types. Sunflower oil is gentle, softening, and works well for dry or sensitive skin. Argan oil is rich in fatty acids and absorbs easily, making it a good choice for dry skin.
4. Open your mini bottle of coco glucoside and empty it completely into your 2 oz bottle. Press it down firmly and squeeze until all of the contents have transferred.
5. Add your oil of choice to the 2 oz bottle. If you would like to test an oil before committing, use your pipette to place a small amount on your inner wrist. To use the pipette with a second oil, wipe it thoroughly with your alcohol pad first.
6. Press your orifice reducer firmly into the opening of the bottle.
7. Place the lid on the bottle and tighten securely — firm, but do not overtighten.
8. Shake the bottle to combine all ingredients.
9. Set your completed cleanser bottle, your 2 cotton puffs, and your distilled water pouch aside. Return any remaining materials to your kit bag.
10. You will test your cleanser on your hand only — not your face — after completing your other lab products. Do not use it yet. When it is time, apply a small amount to the back of your hand only. A sink will be needed to rinse. Do not apply to your face during this session.
QUESTIONS
This formula is called bi-phase. Describe what the two phases are, why they stay separate at rest, and what causes them to activate when water is introduced.
Which add-in did you choose and what is the specific chemistry behind why it benefits your skin type?
Describe what happened when you lifted the sheet. If you observed foaming or lathering, explain the mechanism that produced it.
The oil phase, the surfactant, and the distilled water each play a distinct role in this formula. Explain what each one does and why all three are necessary for the formula to work completely.
